Birthday Party Playbook: Party Room vs. Catering vs. Full Buyout
Planning a birthday without the regrets. How headcount, budget and facilities should decide your venue, plus popular party rooms in Kwun Tong and To Kwa Wan.
For a birthday party, the venue decides everything. Get it right and the room buzzes without draining your wallet; get it wrong and you are either cramped or badly overcharged. Here are the three common formats and who each one suits.
Party Room: Best Value for Small Groups
For 10 to 30 guests, a party room is almost always the answer. Most come with sound systems, karaoke, a projector, a Switch or PS5 and mahjong, plus a kitchen so you can cook or order in. Pricing is typically per person per hour, or a per-person 3–4 hour package. Kwun Tong, To Kwa Wan and Lai Chi Kok have the deepest selection.

Catering & Buyout: For Bigger or Fancier Do
Once you are at 40 or 50 guests, or the occasion calls for something more formal such as a milestone birthday, a restaurant buyout or banquet venue makes more sense. These usually carry a minimum spend, and in return you get staff service and much more space.

- How many guests? 10–30 points to a party room; over 40 points to a buyout or catering.
- Playing or eating? Karaoke and gaming means party room; a proper sit-down meal means restaurant buyout.
- What is the budget? Party rooms mostly run $50–$200 per head; buyouts set a minimum spend, so divide it by your headcount before comparing.
Party room rates normally exclude food, so you buy or order in. Before booking, confirm the minimum hours, the overtime rate, whether you can bring alcohol, and how cleaning fees work. Those four catch people out most often.
